It’s hard to say what we were on about this week. There was a sense of doing the Charleston on the deck of the Titanic, and also one of “Look, how beautiful, it’s June!”
A certain nostalgia prompted us to revive the Lemonheads, Uncle Tupelo, and Unrest, not to mention the still very active Mountain Goats, currently on tour everywhere. We played “Jaipur” from The Coroner’s Gambit — classic Mountain Goats with all the trimmings including Darnielle’s trademarked* pissed-off vocals.
Baffling number of the week was “Good Luck, Babe” by Chappell Roan. We had only just heard of Chappell Roan, and the first time through this song, we thought “too pop.” The second time through we thought “Song of the Year.” It’s that kind of song. There are a few versions of it circulating — a sped up version and a slowed down version. The sped up version reminds us of Kate Bush, the slower, lower version, Annie Lennox. You could do worse.
Chillhop’s new comp, Chillhop Essentials Summer 2024, is out and it’s totally great! — completely fits the bill for chill on these laidback summer afternoons. We thought Mac Kay captured the laziness of the season with his song, “Summer.”
