Lots of new music this week after our last show was prematurely wiped out by the solar storms that rolled in the next day. But hey, at least we got to see the Northern Lights, finally.
Rather than replay last week, we just rolled on with new music, starting with “The Neu! Testament” by Hidoux, a speculative number that imagines what Jesus would say if he ever got fed up with us. We finally got a copy of Mountain Goats Jenny from Thebes album and played tracks from that — much smoother than we remembered but still the John Darnielle we know and love.
It’s almost embarrassing how much we loved the power pop anthem “One For The Ages” by The Future Unwritten, but we forgive ourselves. Speaking of guilty pleasures, CG finally played some Atarashii Gakko!
Japanese duo BOYISH has a great new album called For those of us who can’t sleep, in the folk rock genre. It’s a pleasure from start to finish but we especially liked “First Storm of Spring,” maybe because of the weather.
Louis Zong continues to please with a slight change of pace called Sun Suite, subtitled “pieces for solo piano,” putting him in a solid tradition going back to Schubert and Debussy.
Oh, and Hungry Town stunned with their harmony vocals, Rinjin mesmerized with the perfect bass lick, and xoxo Xopher riddled us one, and proved that you can make music with an immersion blender…
