Here We Go Again – June 26, 2019

| Radio

Perhaps it is that in the sum-sum-summertime, the living gets easy and so do the tunes. We didn’t challenge ourselves too much this week on Bubble Wrap radio. Rather, we caressed our listeners gently with the soft breezes of pop, throwing in a little funk for zest. L-Vis 1990, more Boogarins, The Truehearts, Scone Cash Players, some random covers, and a whole bunch of twofers must suffice to summarize the evening.

Good Old Summertime – June 19, 2019

| Radio

Finding summer music is not a difficult task — there are at least a bazillion summer songs. We played a bunch of summer favorites, from the likes of George Clinton, Kool and the Gang, and Teen Girl Scientists Monthly. New music too, including Lillie Mae, Tinariwen, and Madonna (we know). And more!

Lettin’ It Slide – June 5, 2019

| Radio

On Bubble Wrap this week, new music from Bourgeois Mystics, Cate Le Bon, Lady Lark, and Maude, to name a few. Also a Kid Creole flashback, a new single from Mavis Staples, weird covers, unremembered oldies, and more. Kid Creole. Kid Creole’s satire is like a stilletto. He may be smiling but you’re stabbed all […]

Summer on My Mind – June 12, 2019

| Radio

Early summer has a way of feeling undefined. Anything can happen but nothing has yet. Still there are trends to be followed…. This week’s trend on Bubble Wrap was that there was no trend. We heard a lot from Boogarins who did a Lagniappe session recently, a trippy track from Ingrid Chavez who is apparently famous, and some sweet pop from Allah-Las. Also, and as always, covers, funky stuff, and a few seminal numbers from the past still worth remembering.

City of Fun – May 29, 2019

| Radio

This week, we had the unusual pleasure of playing music by a local band, those popularizers of so-called ‘heart rock’ known as Yellowfront, from the bonny burg of Brattleboro, VT.  Also on the list, newer releases from Dream Syndicate, Amyl and the Sniffers, Sinkane, among others. Sinkane.  Most of the bands that do Lagniappe Sessions […]

Tumult for the Pedigreed – May 22, 2019

| Radio

Lots of calls this week from the faithful listeners of radioland. We appreciate hearing from them. Otherwise, radio is a bit like talking to yourself, or in our case, playing each other songs and then talking about them. This week on Bubble Wrap, we talked about the luscious weather, our annoyance with “the Man,” and […]

Working It Out – May 15, 2019

| Radio

Over a substrata of new equipment shock, the themes for this week’s Bubble Wrap show were partying, relationships, and…that’s about it really.  The perennial themes of pop music.  If you were listening, you might have heard Ohio Players and En Vogue, or Lou Reed and Sting, or MorMor and Pure Bathing Culture.  You would have […]

People’s Post – May 8, 2019

| Radio

We missed a show on May Day but we made up for it this week, haphazardly but with gusto. There are times when it seems necessary to spout views and opinions and this is one of them. Bubble Wrap kicked off with Sonic Youth and closed with Superfonicos, and somehow it all came out right. New music, old complaints, live readings from old books, and a pair of tributes to the gallant Gilets Jaunes. What does this mean? We haven’t a clue.

Rain These Days – Playlist for April 17, 2019

| Radio

Indeed, it has been stereotypically rainy this April, and tonight was no exception. But Bubble Wrap Radio must go on. We played “Rain,” a perfectly lovely song performed by Julian Lynch as captured by music minutiae blog Aquarium Drunkard. Also, new Jamila Woods, Anderson .Paak, Beck, and 26 Bats! Oldies from Natural Child, Negativland, The […]

Unearthing Rock and Roll

| Music

In a bit of welcome sonic archaeology, Aquarium Drunkard just posted a bunch of live tracks dating back to the 1980s from Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ.  I’m listening to it for maybe the third time today, and I’ll probably listen to it some more.  Hell, I might listen all night. Entitled Hoboken Nights, it brings […]

Bring on the Effectron – April 10, 2019

| Radio

Bubble Wrap radio featured another batch of new tunes from around the country and the world including Blackpink, AlaskaAlaska, and Trina South. Also on tap — historic Disney park audio rarities, funk, go go, and a killer version of Benny and the Jets by Master Plan.

The Playwrights – Guy DeBord Is Really Dead

| Records

It was November, in the first days after the 2004 elections when all seemed lost and revolution the only option, that I first encountered The Playwrights. Perhaps it was meant to be. The Playwrights latest ep, entitled ‘Guy Debord Is Really Dead,’ is dedicated to the founder of the late 60s political phenomenon the Situationists. The Revolution of Everyday Life, referred to in the song, is the bible of that movement. It was the right tune at the right time.

On The Wing – April 3, 2019

| Radio

This week’s Bubble Wrap radio show featured music by Maze, theme park snippets, and three whole songs by Clinic (who have a new album out this year). Due to a syncing disaster, all the new songs for this week’s show were not available when called upon, but we made up for that with a bunch […]
